Social Media Trends to Look Out for in 2022

Social media plays a decisive role in the lives of both businesses and individuals. Did you know that in 2021, there was almost a 10% growth in the number of active social media users? That’s 400 million new users. (source: StatusBrew) Ever changing social media trends can revolutionize the creator-economy swiftly.

We already know the power of using social media. Let’s talk about the predicted social media trends in 2022.

  1. Influencer marketing will become bigger than it already is
  2. Short & quick content will continue to thrive
  3. Traditional e-commerce will further transition to social commerce
  4. Social activity: the new currency
  5. Influencing on LinkedIn
  6. Long-lasting content will flourish
  7. Augmented Reality will play a bigger role in marketing strategies

Influencer marketing will become even bigger than it already is

This should come as no surprise. Social media platforms are flooded with nano, micro, and macro-influencers. Despite that, there seems to be no saturation point in sight. Businesses are using influencer marketing to promote their products and services because they’ve seen just how effective it is.

People trust people, and brands know it. A whopping 66% of brands are speculated to take up their influencer marketing budgets this year. (source: Neal Schaffer)

Short & quick content will continue to thrive

The banning of TikTok in India didn’t stop the trend of short-form vertical videos. In addition to Instagram Reels, there exist several Indian platforms like MXTakakak, Moj, and Chingari. Of course, the platform of choice would depend on your target audience.

If you’re trying to reach your audience in the most impactful and effective way, you need to be creating these videos. These videos must either be entertaining or provide some value to the viewer’s life.

Traditional e-commerce will further transition to social commerce

Social commerce is a form of e-commerce that occurs on social media platforms. With influencer marketing becoming popular, social commerce is gaining more significant popularity. Almost a third of internet users across the globe bank on social media to find products that they’d like to purchase. (source: GWI)

Social commerce occurs through brand collaborations, product placements, influencer marketing, advertising, etc. This applies to the sales of online-courses too. As course creators, it’s vital to establish a brand identity and promote yourself on social media

Social activity: the new currency

One social media marketing trend that’s significantly new but will take the market by storm is using social posts and activity as a currency. Social engagement is valuable, and we all know that. It has become much more than getting likes and comments. It’s about creating a marketplace of content online and giving value to posts of all types.

One aspect of this is Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) gaining traction. People are either using social media to sell NFTs or their social content as NFTs. Brands and social media platforms alike are jumping on the NFT bandwagon.

Another aspect of social activity as currency is where brands give followers goodies in exchange for posts. In 2022, it’s predicted that an effective social media post will be recognized further, thus making it a valuable currency.

Influencing on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is no longer just a platform to find jobs or hire professionals. Two new members join LinkedIn every second, according to the platform. The platform has its own set of influencers, LinkedIn has also been doing more for its creators. They introduced a “creator mode” accessible to anyone who wants to use it.

LinkedIn’s increase in popularity in the last two years owes a lot to the pandemic and, with it, the work-from-home culture. The influencer game on LinkedIn is vastly different from other platforms. Visuals are not key, long-form content thrives, short-form content can also surprise you, and the audience behaviour is also different.

For course creators, especially for those who run professional courses, this would be a must-use platform in 2022.

Long-lasting content will flourish

It wasn’t too long ago that posts about Instagram’s algorithm favouring “saves” as a form of engagement started trending. Although users engage more frequently with short content, it doesn’t necessarily mean they only prefer content that’s relevant for a short period.

Apart from the trending memes and reels, users across platforms value content that can benefit them in the long run. Content that can be “saved”, “pinned” and “bookmarked” is highly effective. And if the algorithms love it too, then there is no reason not to create such content.

Think about what your audience would find beneficial and appealing, and find a way to deliver it to them in a quick and easy format.

Augmented Reality will play a bigger role in marketing strategies

Augmented Reality has been playing a crucial role in social media engagement for some time already. Fun filters for briefly trying out a different hair or eye colour, or creating videos of you in an entirely different reality — there’s already significant growth and popularity with AR.

AR is one of the top social media marketing trends to look for because it brings with it a lot of engagement. Platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram (Stories) are proof of this. We’ve also seen brands and influencers coming up with their own AR filters as an additional medium of content.

If AR is part of your skillset, there’s immense potential in terms of knowledge-sharing in the subject.

And that’s a wrap on the top 2022 social media trends that we think you should look out for. If you’re a course creator, you should consider implementing the above or teaching people how to leverage them.
